Sunday Recap: September 9

This Summer our music director, Josh, and his wife had their first baby. He adds such value to our team as a keys player and leader so of course we really missed him during his weeks of maternity leave.

Shortly after his baby was born he was rushed to the emergency room with severe blood clots. He underwent major surgery and had another six weeks of recovery. He was a champ. Praise God he pulled through safely!

So over the Summer, we had quite a hole in our music team. It's always extremely exciting to see who God brings and uses to fill the gaps. There were three woman who stepped up in a major way to play keys on our team. I don't think they would have elevated to the level they did nearly as quickly without this unforeseen gap in our team.

All that to say, this Sunday, Josh was back! And to make it even better, one of the women who had filled in so graciously played alongside him. We had two keys players which is a rare occurrence for us but it made for some really great musical dynamics and sonic textures. I'm thankful for all God is doing in our team!

I remember hearing this song for the first time at a conference and loving it. But I also distinctly remember being intimidated musical intricacies. "Could our team play that?" I wondered. It was a little bit of a stretch to venture into more of an R&B vibe when we first introduced this song a few years ago. But now, it feels effortless. Don't be afraid to push yourself and your team!

Lion & The Lamb - Leeland

I really appreciate songs that allow us to consider the second coming of Christ. It's a pillar of our faith but not something we often sing about. Lion & The Lamb gives us a great chance to look expectantly at our eternal hope and eternal home.

Throne of Grace - Calvary Monterey Music

This is an original song written by our team at Calvary Monterey. It was inspired by a podcast teaching I heard on Hebrews 4:14-16. I was struck by the phrase "Throne of Grace" and started working on the song that day. You can hear the song in the Live Stream video below.

Revelation Song - Northpoint Music

Revelation Song isn't a song we lead often anymore. But it's still a powerful, vertical declaration of praise to God.

Man of Sorrows - Hillsong Worship

This is a great track to lead during communion. This week we kept the dynamics a little lower to suit the mood of distributing and receiving Communion.

COMMUNION

Our church receives communion together on Sunday at least once a month. This month, I lead the communion introduction and the receiving of the Communion elements. Here's how it progressed.

Read: Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;

and as one from whom men hide their faces

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Introduce what communion is and while we're participating in it today.

Ushers begin distributing the Communion Elements.

Read: Isaiah 53:4-5

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;

TEACHING

This week our Lead Pastor, Nate Holdridge, continued the "God Hearted" series on the life of David. We looked at 2 Samuel 16 & 17 with a message titled "Do not be afraid. Take heart. Have faith in God."
