6 Great Songs For Communion

Receiving communion as a Church family is one of the most powerful and sacred practices of the faith.  Guiding people through the process of confessing sin, remembering Christ and receiving forgiveness is a wonderful privilege.  On Sunday we shared communion at our Church and I was reminded of a conversation I recently had with a friend about communion songs.  He asked what type of songs are best for communion?  What songs could I suggest?  I thought I’d share some of my favorites.

Man Of Sorrows - Hillsong Worship

Hillsong Live Album Glorious Ruins, 2013, Name of Song: Man of sorrows To purchase this song in itunes, https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/glorious-ruins-live-deluxe/id659798061 VERSE 1 Man of sorrows Lamb of God By His own betrayed The sin of man and wrath of God Has been on Jesus laid VERSE 2 Silent as He stood

Communion songs are often at their best when they include the whole story, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.  This song does that in a beautiful way.  The bridge lyrics “Now my debt is paid, it is paid in full” remind me of a modern update of the classic hymn “Jesus Paid It All”.

The Victory - Phil Wickham

A beautiful and simple song.  Here we declare to Jesus “The victory is Yours” admitting that Jesus has won.  I often like to lead the first portion of the song up to the instrumental during the distribution of the elements.  Then I’ll play softly while a Pastor leads us through receiving communion.  Finally I’ll have everyone stand and lead the bridge through the end of the song.

“Death has been beaten

The grave has been conquered

Jesus is risen, life ever after”

Raised To Life - Elevation Worship

"Only King Forever", recorded live at Elevation Blakeney in Charlotte, NC, is now available on iTunes: http://ele.vc/itunesokf Check out free lyrics and chords, loops, tutorials, and more from "Only King Forever": http://elevationworship.com/onlykingforever/ http://www.elevationworship.com

I love the confession in this song.  “Great was the debt that we owed and how high was the price of our healing”.  Like many of our other entries this song has a very powerful Bridge.

“Sin was strong but Jesus is stronger

Our shame was great but Jesus You’re greater”

What Wondrous Love Is This - Chelsea Moon

Chelsea Moon w/ the Franz Brothers in a live performance of "What Wondrous Love Is This?" from their new album HYMN PROJECT: VOL.

First published in 1811 and written by an unknown author this song feels like a gift from centuries past.  This is the rare song that I remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard it.  It made a huge impression on me.  That was in 2003 and I’ve heard many versions since but Chelsea Moon’s rendition is one of my favorites.  Equal parts haunting and reflective it drives towards it's responsive ending.  “And through eternity I’ll sing on”

Once For All - Scott Cunningham Band

With some very creative lyrical turns and one of the most beautiful melodies you’ve heard you’ll want to lead this one right away.  Once For All describes Christ’s crucifixion while finishing the narrative with the resurrection.  “He rose up form the grave, victorious!”

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us - Stuart Townend

Unlike our other songs this one does not end with a celebration of the resurrection but rather leaves us with the ramifications Jesus’ death.  “His wounds have paid my ransom”.  I don’t think this is a fault but rather a strength.  Depending on how you’re leading communion this may be appropriate.  I like Chelsea Moon’s rendition of this modern hymn.

Have you lead any of these songs?  What are some of your favorites?  I’d love to hear.  Please share in the comments below!
