The Unexpected Truth About Creativity
The subject, discussion and dissection of creativity is all around us. It’s been an extremely popular topic of books, blogs, podcasts, conferences and coffee shop discussions. What is it? Does everyone have it? Where does it come from?
As Christians we know that our God is a God of incredible creativity. Many like to reference the very first verse of the Bible, “In the beginning God CREATED…” and rightfully so but this isn’t the whole story. Saying that God was a creator and as His image bearers we are creative is a good place to start but wouldn’t you like to know one of the sources of God’s creativity?
Right now at Calvary Monterey our Pastor is taking us through the book of Proverbs on Wednesday nights. While looking at Provers 3 I noticed something for the first time.
“The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
by understanding He established the heavens;
by His knowledge the deeps broke open,
and the clouds drop down the dew.” - Proverbs 3:19-20
This seems to show that it wasn’t merely a blind explosion of pure creativity that brought the heaven’s and the earth it was by WISDOM the Lord founded the earth, by UNDERSTANDING He established the heavens, by KNOWLEDGE the deeps broke open.
Another word that could be used for the wisdom described in the Provers is skill. How do we acquire skill? Studying, learning, observing, focusing, diligent perseverance. Many of the things that seem to be lost on the modern creative.
My encouragement to you is if you want to be more creative than get more skilled. Whatever it is you do, work hard to become better at it. I’ve found my best creative ideas have come as a culmination of countless hours of relentless learning.
Finally, God’s word tells us “in Him (Jesus Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” -Colossians 2:3. Just one more reason to draw near to Jesus today.
